Much Money Has Been Awarded?
Over the last sixteen years MEF has awarded over $172,000 in grants. This year over $28,000 in grant requests was received.

This Years Grants:
Over $11,000 will be distributed to the following grant recipients:
Jaworek Elementary School:
- Donna Cunningham & the Second Grade Team (Jodi Shulman, Traci Cappadona,
Julia Carlman, Amanda Tully, Jill Leonard, Leanne Vorce) - $2366.00 for
“Enriching the Second Grade Curriculum with Mini-iPads”
iPad minis will be used to provide students with enrichment opportunities and extra
support in math, reading, and writing. They are also a good fit in the hands of small
children. The second grade teachers at Jaworek want their students to have as much
access to technology as possible and they could be putting these iPads in the hands of
students each day. They will be better preparing them for life in the 21st century.
Students will be instantly motivated to learn.
- Linda Ostaski- $750.00 for “Document Camera for the Visual Arts Program”
As an art teacher at Jaworek Elementary School, Ms. Ostaski wants her students to
have a love for learning new things. A document camera will allow her to do
demonstrations and present material to her students in a dramatic way.
Kane Elementary School:
- Eric Plummer- $306.00 for “Shall Wii Dance Some More”
This project will be an enhancement to the “Shall Wii Dance” curriculum piece already in
place at Kane School. Enhancements will include upgrades that will expand software
choices and improve audio and video quality for the participants.
- Shannon Stemple - $1889.00 for “What’s Your Story – Digital Storytelling Using
the iPad”
Using the iPad and a variety of digital storytelling tools, students will utilize technology
skills, synthesize and analyze information as well as collaborate with peers through the
creation of digital stories. Through the creation of digital stories, students are given
important opportunities to practice a variety of specific 21st century skills, content, and
technology standards. The process of creating and publishing a digital story integrates
technical literacy, communication skills, teamwork and collaboration, oral speaking,
creativity, and project management skills.
Recipient of the Carvalho/Roth Grant to promote literacy:
- Amy Jo Sibley and Beth Terada - $798.00 for “iPads for Interventions”
Kane School’s MCAS scores show that vocabulary is a major area where the Kane
students are struggling. They plan to create and present interactive lessons on the
iPads where ELL and Special Education students are usi ng them in small groups in a
hands on way. Using the latest apps that Apple has to offer, they will supplement,
preteach, reteach and enhance the Common Core curriculum. By integrating
technology into the students’ learning, they hope to bridge the gap be tween what they
know and what they need to know for success with the Common Core Standards and
ultimately improve their MCAS scores.
Jaworek, Kane, and Richer Elementary Schools:
Recipient of the FishEye Software Grant to promote technology:
- Jennifer Young, Sophie Glasser, and Victoria Saldana- $1198.00 for “Moby Max
License”
This grant will allow the Marlborough Public Schools to purchase a license for Moby
Max, an online program that will provide all elementary and middle school teachers the
ability to offer differentiated and individualized math lessons and practice for all of the
students they serve.
Whitcomb School:
- Cathy Rosenstock- $753.35 for “Reading and Sharing Through Multiple Formats”
This grant will fund the purchase of 3 Nook e-readers, accessories, and e-books. The availability in the Middle School library of e-readers for the purpose of reading/listening to books will expose students to technology formats, processes, and resources they may not be familiar with, including the digital book resources available free through the public library. The technology will complement a reading incentive project in which students write book reviews to be shared online.
Whitcomb and Marlborough High School:
- Jose Reyes- $750.00 for “Elmo for Whitcomb English and History/Social Studies
Departments”
A document camera will support English and history/social studies teachers from grades
6 – 8 so that they can create lessons that will more fully engage their regular, ELL, and
special education students. The Elmo document camera will enable teachers and
students to integrate technology into their reading and writing instruction.
Marlborough High School:
- Roberta Collins - $600 for “Project Runway at MHS”
Imagine Project Runway without fabulous photo images! With the addition of a SLR
digital camera, every student in the Clothing classes will have the opportunity to create
a professional quality portfolio of their work from magazine stills to runway images, and
they will be able to emphasize the quality of their work down to the smallest detail.
- Kristin Arbeene, Christopher Henry, & Jose Reyes - $750.00 for “Elmo for High
School English Department”
A document camera will support teaching for English
instruction in writing across the 9-12 grades, at all levels including College Prep, Honors, AP, ELL, and special education
students. The Elmo document camera will enable teachers and students to integrate
technology with everyday learning and allow students to engage in writing instruction in
a visual way.
- Jillian Morin - $1796.00 for “Using iPads for Language Acquisition and Creating
Educational Videos”
Through the use of iPads, Marlborough High School’s English Language Learners will
not only acquire English faster and more efficiently, but also use technology to teach
other students in our district what they have learned through the use of filmmaking.
The
